For Whom the Bell Tolls की कहानी शुरू होती है May, 1937 में जब Spanish Civil War चल रही होती है। एक American professor, Robert Jordan जो Republicans की मदद करने के लिए war लड़ने जाता है और Spanish guerrilla fighters के साथ काम करने के लिए उनसे पहाड़ों पर मिलता है जहां वे छुप रहे होते हैं।
Republic command, Robert Jordan को अपने दुश्मन Fascists लोगों के एक पुल को बम से उड़ाने का मुश्किल और खतरनाक काम देती है। War के दौरान Fascists उसी पुल से हमला करते थे, इसीलिए उस पल को बम से उड़ाना Larger Republican Offensive का एक important part था। Anselmo नाम का एक बूढ़ा और भरोसेमंद guerrilla fighter, Robert Jordan को guerrilla camp ले जाता है जो कि गुफा में बना हुआ होता है। Anselmo, loyal है और उसे शिकार करने का भी शौक है। वह सारे orders follow करता है और Robert Jordan की हर संभव मदद करता है।
Anselmo के साथ कैंप जाते हुए Robert Jordan की मुलाकात कैंप के leader Pablo से होती है। Pablo एक मतलबी और जिद्दी आदमी है जो कभी एक great guerrilla fighters हुआ करता था। Pablo war से थक चुका है। वह बहुत ज्यादा शराब पीता है और उसे अपने घोड़ों से बहुत लगाव है। पहली ही मुलाकात में Pablo, Robert Jordan से बहुत rudely बात करता है और बुरी तरह पेश आता है। Pablo, bridge operation के खिलाफ है और उसका मानना है कि इस ऑपरेशन की वजह से guerrilla fighters की जान खतरे में पड़ सकती है। Pablo के rude behaviour को देखकर Robert Jordan सोचता है कि आगे चलकर Pablo उन्हें धोखा दे सकता है और mission में रुकावट पैदा कर सकता है। उसके बाद कैंप में Robert Jordan की मुलाकात Pablo की गर्लफ्रेंड Pilar से होती है। Pilar एक लंबी चौड़ी fit lady है जो अपने दुश्मन का डटकर सामना करती है। साथ ही साथ वह honest, loyal और broad minded भी है। वह हर situation को बहुत जल्दी समझ लेती है। हालांकि वह group leader नहीं है लेकिन वह guerrilla group को एक leader के मुकाबले ज्यादा बेहतर समझती है। Group के बाकी members Pilar को ही leader मानते हैं।
Robert Jordan और Pilar की बहुत जल्दी दोस्ती हो जाती है। शाम के वक्त Robert Jordan कैंप के बाकी 6 मेंबर से मिलता है। वे 6 मेंबर्स ये हैं -
Rafael, जो कि unreliable है उस पर भरोसा नहीं किया जा सकता।
Agustin - एक भरोसेमंद guerrilla fighter जो machine gun चलाता है और गाली-गलौज भी करता है।
Fernando - जो हर बात को बहुत जल्दी दिल पर ले लेता है।
Primitivo - एक सफेद बालों वाला senior guerrilla fighter।
Andres और Eladio जो एक दूसरे के भाई हैं।
कैंप में एक जवान लड़की भी है जिसका नाम Maria है।
Marua पहले Fascists लोगों की कैद में हुआ करती थी और Fascists उसका रेप किया करते थें। Robert Jordan और Maria को एक दूसरे से प्यार हो जाता है।
Robert Jordan और Anselmo पुल का मुआयना करने जाते हैं। जब वे वापस आते हैं तो Pablo सबके सामने खड़ा होकर कहता है कि वह और उसके साथी bridge operation में उनकी मदद नहीं करेंगे, तभी Pilar और उसके साथी Pablo का साथ देने से इंकार कर देते हैं। इसलिए pablo शांत हो जाता है। Rafael, Robert Jordan से कहता है कि वह Pablo को जान से मार दे, लेकिन Pilar उन्हें भरोसा दिलाती है कि Pablo अब कोई गड़बड़ नहीं करेगा। उसी रात Maria, Robert Jordan से मिलने आती है और वे दोनों एक-दूसरे से अपने प्यार का इज़हार करते हैं। Maria, Robert Jordan के साथ ही सो जाती है।
अगले दिन Pilar, Robert Jordan और Maria को अपने साथ जंगल के रास्ते Ek Sordo के पास ले जाती है। El Sordo एक दूसरे guerrilla fighters के ग्रुप का leader है और एक शांत आदमी भी है। Robert Jordan की तरह Ek Sordo भी bridge operation को कामयाब बनाना चाहता है। El Sordo, Bridge operation में Robert Jordan का साथ देने के लिए तैयार हो जाता है। वे दोनों पुल को दिन में ही बम से उड़ाने का फैसला करते हैं। कैंप की ओर वापस जाते हुए Robert Jordan और Maria रुक जाते हैं and they make love. Pilar उन दोनों को प्यार करते हुए देख लेती है। Maria Pilar से confess करती है कि वह और Jordan जब प्यार कर रहे थे तो उसे ऐसा लगा कि जैसे दुनिया घूम रही हो। Pilar Maria से कहती है कि इस तरह का एहसास इंसान को अपनी life में तीन बार से ज्यादा नहीं होता। जब वे camp वापस पहुंच जाते हैं तो Robert Jordan शराब के नशे में धुत Pablo को भड़काता है ताकि उसे Pablo को जान से मारने का बहाना मिल जाए। लेकिन Pablo नहीं भड़कता और Jordan की insult कर देता है। Agustin भी Pablo को भड़काने के लिए उसके मुंह पर थप्पड़ मारता है लेकिन Pablo कुछ नहीं कहता। जब Pablo कुछ देर के लिए camp से बाहर चला जाता है तो camp के बाकी members कहते हैं कि Pablo सच में खतरनाक है इसलिए उसे जान से मार देना चाहिए। Robert Jordan, Pablo को मारने के लिए तैयार हो जाता है लेकिन तभी Pablo कैंप में वापस आकर कहता है कि उसने अपना इरादा बदल दिया है और अब वह पुल को उड़ाने में उनकी मदद करने के लिए तैयार है।
उसी रात Maria, Robert Jordan के साथ सोने के लिए दोबारा उसके पास आती है। वे दोनों एक दूसरे को अपनी feelings बताते हैं। और कहते हैं कि वे दो जिस्म एक जान हैं और एक दूसरे के बिना नहीं रह सकते हैं। अगली सुबह Robert Jordan जब नींद से जागता है तो एक fascist cavalryman को अपने कैंप की ओर जाते देखता है। Jordan उस fascist को गोली से उड़ा देता है और Cano के बाकी members को जगाता है। Breakfast के बाद group members को कुछ दूर से गोलियां चलने की आवाज सुनाई देती है। Robert Jordan जान जाता है कि fascists, El Sordo पर हमला कर रहे हैं। Agustin और Primitivo El Sordo की मदद करना चाहते हैं लेकिन Robert Jordan और Pilar जानते हैं कि अब El Sordo की मदद करने का कोई फायदा नहीं है।
Fascists, El Sordo के camp पर बुरी तरह हमला कर रहे होते हैं। El Sordo के आदमी मरने का नाटक करते हैं और Fascist captain को शूट करने की कोशिश करते हैं लेकिन कुछ टाइम बाद Fascists, El Sordo के कैंप को बम से उड़ा देते हैं औरों के हर group member को जान से मार देते हैं। Fascist captain, attack में मारे गए सभी soldiers की गर्दन काटने का ऑर्डर देता है।
"El Sordo और उसके साथी मारे गए", यह खबर सुनकर Robert Jordan और उसके सभी guerrilla fighters को इतना ज्यादा दुख होता है जैसे कि जीतने की उम्मीद ही खत्म हो गई हो। Robert Jordan, Republic command को एक dispatch लिखता है कि bridge operation और larger offensive दोनों को ही तुरंत रोक दिया जाए क्योंकि fascists को उनके plan के बारे में पता चल गया है, इसलिए यह mission successful नहीं होगा।
Robert Jordan, Andres को order देता है कि वह उस dispatch को General Golz के headquarter तक पहुंचा दे। General Golz, republican leader है जिसने Robert Jordan को bridge operation के लिए भेजा है। उसी रात Maria दोबारा Robert Jordan के साथ सोने के लिए आती है और वे दोनों अपनी आगे की लाइफ Madrid में साथ बिताने की कल्पना करते हैं। इसी दौरान Madrid में रहने वाला Robert Jordan का एक दोस्त "Karkov" जो कि एक Russian Journalist है और "Pravda" नाम के Russian newspaper का correspondent भी है।
एक अच्छा दोस्त होने के नाते "Karkov" Robert Jordan को wartime politics की कड़वी हकीकत बताता है। Karkov , Robert Jordan के लिए परेशान होता है क्योंकि उसे पता चल जाता है कि fascists, Republican Offensive के बारे में जानते हैं जो उन्होंने अगले दिन के लिए प्लान किया है।
आधी रात को Pilar Jordan के पास दौड़ती हुई आती है और बताती है कि Pablo उस गोला बारूद को लेकर भाग गया है जिससे वे पुल को उड़ाने वाले हैं। यह सुनकर Jordan को बहुत गुस्सा आता है लेकिन कुछ देर बाद वह अपना गुस्सा control करता है और बचे हुए थोड़े से गोला बारूद के साथ ही पुल को उड़ाने का ऑर्डर देता है।
सुबह का वक्त होता है जैसे ही Jordan, Maria और अपनी टीम के साथ पुल को उड़ाने के लिए निकलता है तभी अचानक Pablo वापस आ जाता है और कहता है कि वह गुस्से में आकर camp से भागा था। Pablo, Jordan को बताता है कि उसने गुस्से में आकर गोला बारूद नदी में फेंक दिया है लेकिन अब उसे अपने किए पर बहुत पछतावा हो रहा है। Jordan की मदद करने के लिए Pablo पास के एक guerrilla fighter band के पांच fighters और उनके पांच घोड़ों को साथ लाता है। उधर Andres, Jordan का dispatch लेकर General Golz के पास जा रहा होता है।
जब Andres republican territory cross करने के बाद General Golz के headquarter पहुंचता है तो Andre Marty नाम का एक politician उसको fascist लोगों का जासूस समझता है और उसको arrest करवा देता है।
Robert Jordan का दोस्त Karkov जो कि एक Russian Journalist है Andres को रिहा करवा लेता है और finally dispatch, General Golz तक पहुंच जाता है। Dispatch को पढ़ने के बाद General Golz कहते हैं कि अब बहुत देर हो चुकी है, war शुरू हो गई है और अब इसे रोका नहीं जा सकता है। उधर Robert Jordan अपनी टीम के साथ bridge operation शुरू कर देता है। Robert Jordan और Anselmo पुल की और आगे बढ़कर गोला बारूद बिछा देते हैं और fascist soldiers पर हमला शुरू कर देते हैं। हमले के दौरान Pilar, Robert Jordan को बताती है कि Eladio को मार दिया गया है और Fernando मरने की हालत में है, इसलिए उन्हें उन दोनों को पीछे छोड़कर आगे बढ़ना होगा।

और घोड़ा Robert Jordan के ऊपर गिर जाता है जिससे उसका पैर टूट जाता है। Robert Jordan जानता है कि वह अब और नहीं चल सकता और उसके team members को उसे वहीं छोड़ कर आगे बढ़ना होगा। Jordan, Maria को अलविदा कहता है और कहता है कि वह उसके साथ न होकर भी हमेशा उसके साथ रहेगा। Pilar और Pablo, Maria को अपने साथ ले जाते हैं और अपनी जान बचा लेते हैं।
Robert Jordan, suicide करने की सोचता है लेकिन बाद में वह जिंदा रहने का फैसला करता है ताकि fascist को रोक सके। जैसे ही fascist lieutenant, Robert Jordan की तरफ आगे बढ़ता है Robert Jordan बुरी तरह घायल होने के बावजूद भी उसे मारना चाहता है और उसका दिल जोर से धड़क रहा होता है।
